In the Rivne region, a man was notified that he was a suspect following a grenade explosion

On August 7, a 48-year-old resident of the village of Bila Krynytsia in the Rivne District was notified that he was a suspect following a grenade explosion that injured two people. The man is being held in a temporary detention facility and faces up to seven years in prison.

The investigative team determined that a 22-year-old man and his 23-year-old girlfriend, who are both students at a university in Kyiv, had come to visit the man’s parents.

Yesterday, August 6, at around 8:30 a.m., the young man found a grenade in the room, which detonated in his hands. The explosion injured both the young man and the young woman who was standing nearby.

Doctors diagnosed the young man with blast trauma, a penetrating abdominal wound, amputation of one hand, partial amputation of a finger on his other hand, and multiple lacerations. The young woman was diagnosed with blast injury, facial skull trauma, traumatic spleen injury, and pneumothorax. Doctors are fighting to save the lives of both young people.

At the scene, bomb disposal experts recovered fragments of a fragmentation grenade. Police determined that the 48-year-old homeowner had brought the munition into the house. He was detained in accordance with legal procedures and, with the approval of the prosecutor’s office, was notified of his status as a suspect in a crime under Part 1 of Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (illegal handling of ammunition). The issue of imposing a preventive measure is currently being decided. Forensic examinations have been ordered. The investigation is ongoing.
