Large-scale oil pollution has been discovered along the coast of the Tuzly Estuaries

In the Odesa region, within the Tuzly Estuaries National Nature Park, significant pollution of the coastline with sunflower oil has been reported. The affected area covers approximately 10,000 square meters; the cause of the incident is under investigation.

This was reported on Facebook by Ivan Rusev, an ecologist and employee of the Tuzly Estuaries National Nature Park.

He noted that, according to satellite monitoring data, the vegetable oil reached the sea within the Tuzly Estuaries National Nature Park as early as Friday, May 8.

“The oil washed up on various sections of the sandbar, including the protected zone of the national park. In total, the area of the sandbar contaminated with vegetable oil during those days reached about 10,000 square meters. No birds contaminated with oil have been found so far,” Rusev wrote.

The ecologist recalled that as a result of the Russian Federation’s strike on port infrastructure near the Pivdennyi port on December 20, 2025, many birds that had died from oil contamination washed up on the national park’s coast, and a significant area of the sandbar was covered in the substance.
