Illegal sandstone mining worth over 337 million hryvnias was uncovered in the Vinnytsia region
Law enforcement officials have notified the director of a company—which, according to the investigation, illegally extracted nearly 38,000 metric tons of sandstone in the Vinnytsia region—that he is a suspect. The losses incurred by the state have been estimated at over 337 million hryvnias.
According to the Office of the Prosecutor General, in 2020 the company obtained a special permit for geological exploration and pilot-scale development of a subsoil plot in the Mohyliv-Podilskyi district. However, according to the investigation, instead of conducting research, the company organized large-scale commercial extraction of sandstone without approved reserves or the necessary procedures.
The investigation established that the company used the extracted mineral resources in its own business operations and, upon completion of the work, renounced the special permit for subsoil use.
The company’s director was charged under Part 4 of Article 240 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—illegal extraction of mineral resources of national importance, resulting in serious consequences. The provision of the article provides for criminal liability, and the final decision on guilt will be made by the court.
