In Kyiv, a doctor was found guilty of causing the death of a woman in labor due to negligence in the performance of her duties
A court in Kyiv handed down a guilty verdict to a 50-year-old obstetrician-gynecologist who was found guilty of professional negligence. According to the prosecutor’s office, the doctor’s actions led to the death of a patient during childbirth.
In July 2023, a pregnant woman was admitted to a reproductive and perinatal care center. The on-call obstetrician-gynecologist conducted the examination and provided further medical care. As a result of the fetal death and the subsequent delivery procedures, the victim sustained injuries to her birth canal, which in turn caused her death.
The prosecutor proved in court that the obstetrician-gynecologist, despite having all the necessary conditions and resources for diagnosis and possessing sufficient professional qualifications, failed to properly monitor the patient from the moment she gave birth to a stillborn child and was in an agonal state. Had the doctor timely diagnosed the physical injuries sustained during childbirth and provided adequate treatment, the woman’s life could have been saved.
The deceased patient left behind two young children, who are now orphans, as their father fell seriously ill after his wife’s death and died shortly thereafter.
In a ruling by the Obolon District Court of Kyiv, the doctor was found guilty of professional negligence, which led to the patient’s death.
The court sentenced her to two years in prison and also granted the civil claims filed by the children’s grandparents, ordering her to pay 15 million hryvnias in compensation for emotional distress to the children of the deceased patient, according to the Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office.
