Ukrtransbezpeka has warned of the dangers of sleeper buses
Ukrtransbezpeka has urged Ukrainians not to use international buses that advertise “sleeping berths.” According to the agency’s head, Mykyta Lagunin, there are no certified buses of this type in Ukraine, and homemade modifications can pose a serious danger to passengers.
The agency also warned that it is already inspecting carriers offering such routes. For using illegally modified buses, they may face penalties, including the revocation of their licenses.
Mykita Lagunin, head of the State Service of Ukraine for Transport Safety, appealed to Ukrainians not to use international bus routes that offer passengers so-called sleeping berths. According to the official, there is currently not a single certified bus in Ukraine that is officially equipped with sleeping berths for passengers.
Lagunin explained that all such structures are installed independently, without the necessary certification and inspections. “I warn all passengers: this is a direct threat to your life—you are buying the illusion of comfort at the cost of your own safety,” he emphasized.
Why Is This Dangerous?
The head of Ukrtransbezpeka explained that passenger transportation should be carried out only by vehicles that meet all safety requirements and have undergone official certification. According to him, during sudden braking or a traffic accident, a person lying down without proper restraint risks sustaining significantly more severe injuries. That is why unauthorized beds or other sleeping areas cannot be considered safe.
Carriers are already being inspected
Lagunin reported that Ukrtransbezpeka is already monitoring advertisements and offers from carriers promoting such buses. If illegally modified vehicles are discovered during inspections, the carriers will be held accountable in accordance with the law.
According to the official, in some cases, they may even face revocation of their passenger transport license. “I urge carriers: do not risk the lives and health of passengers. Passenger transport must ensure safety, not turn into a one-way trip,” Lagunin emphasized.
Why This Issue Has Become Relevant
Since the start of the full-scale war, Ukrainians have been using international bus routes much more frequently, as civilian air travel in Ukraine remains suspended. Due to the long travel times, many carriers have begun advertising buses with sleeping berths as a more comfortable option for long-distance routes.
At the same time, relevant authorities stress that comfort should not take precedence over safety. That is why passengers are advised to carefully check the type of vehicle they are traveling in and avoid choosing routes where buses have been modified without proper permits and certification.
