A lawmaker and robber who was on the run to avoid prison was caught in Transcarpathia – video
Law enforcement officers in Zakarpattia Oblast located and detained a council member of the Velyky Berezny community who had been evading his sentence for more than half a year. Under the procedural guidance of the Uzhhorod District Prosecutor’s Office, in cooperation with criminal police operatives, the arrest took place at a private residence in the Velyky Berezny district.
The case relates to events in 2019, when the council member, along with two accomplices, committed an armed robbery against a group of foreign tourists from Tajikistan, including two young children. The attackers stole approximately $7,000, cell phones, and personal belongings from the victims, after which they illegally held the victims captive in the basement of a private home for three days.
In February 2025, the Mukachevo City and District Court found the deputy guilty and sentenced him to eight years in prison with confiscation of property, and also ordered him to pay the victims 332,000 hryvnias in compensation for emotional distress. In December 2025, the appellate court upheld the verdict, after which it became final; however, the convicted man had been on the run from justice the entire time.
