Law enforcement officials have uncovered a criminal scheme involving the illegal smuggling of men across Ukraine’s state border, which was orchestrated by an organizer while he was in a pretrial detention center.

This was reported by the Western Regional Directorate of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine – Western Border.

The operation was carried out by a joint interagency group involving officers from the Main Operational and Investigative Department of the Mukachevo Border Guard Detachment, the Strategic Investigations Department in Zakarpattia Oblast, and police investigators. The special unit “Dozor” and military personnel from the “Yablunivka” unit were also involved in the arrest.

According to the investigation, the organizer of the scheme was a 30-year-old Transcarpathian man who, at the time of his exposure, was in custody at a correctional facility. To carry out the scheme, he enlisted a married couple from Transcarpathia.

Investigators established that for $8,000, the accomplices promised to transport the “client” past checkpoints to a location for illegal border crossing.

Law enforcement officers detained the man and woman on the outskirts of the village of Vyshkovo while they were receiving payment for their services.

The organizer of the scheme and his two accomplices were notified of their status as suspects under Part 3 of Article 332 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—illegal transportation of persons across the state border of Ukraine.

Investigative actions are currently underway, and other possible participants in the criminal scheme are being identified.
