A scheme involving illegal logging worth over 34 million hryvnias was uncovered in the Zhytomyr region
In the Zhytomyr region, law enforcement officials uncovered a scheme involving illegal logging, the sale of timber, and the laundering of the proceeds. Two individuals involved in the scheme have been notified of the charges against them.
To carry out the logging, he hired workers and specialized equipment for cash and selected the sites himself; according to the investigation, the workers were unaware of the illegal nature of the work.
From June 2024 to February 2025, approximately 4,300 trees were illegally felled. The damage to the environment exceeds 34.26 million UAH.
To sell the timber and launder the proceeds, the organizer enlisted the help of an individual entrepreneur, who entered into approximately 35 contracts for the supply of timber. According to the investigation, nearly 2 million hryvnias were laundered in this manner.
The man is charged with illegal logging, transportation, and sale of illegally harvested timber, as well as the laundering of proceeds obtained by criminal means (Part 4 of Article 246 and Part 2 of Article 209 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). The woman has been notified of her status as a suspect under Part 2 of Article 209 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
Both suspects have been ordered to remain in custody, with the option of posting bail.
In accordance with Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court verdict.
