NABU has uncovered illegal enrichment by a member of parliament

Detectives from the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and prosecutors from the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) have exposed a member of the Ukrainian Parliament for illicit enrichment, the amount of which significantly exceeds his official income.

This was reported by NABU.

The investigation established that between 2020 and 2021, the official acquired assets totaling nearly 13 million hryvnias. These funds were used to purchase a 132.6-square-meter apartment in central Kyiv, as well as a cottage with a plot of land on the Black Sea coast in the village of Koblevo. The cost of design and renovation for the Kyiv property alone exceeded 5.5 million hryvnias.

Currently, the elected official has been notified of suspicion under Article 368-5 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. According to Ukrainska Pravda, the case involves Oleksandr Kachny, a representative of the banned OPZZh party, whose relatives were previously unable to explain the origin of significant funds in journalistic investigations. Law enforcement agencies continue to gather evidence to refer the case to court.

In March 2024, a Bihus.Info investigation reported that Kachny’s 87-year-old mother-in-law had gifted her daughter 6.5 million hryvnias in 2022 but could not recall what business her family was involved in.

Earlier, a group of MPs registered a draft resolution in the Verkhovna Rada titled “On the Loss of Parliamentary Mandates by Certain Members of the Ukrainian Parliament” (No. 7323). The document proposes stripping OPZZh party leader Viktor Medvedchuk and several other party members, including Kachny, of their parliamentary mandates.
