The head of the National Police reported that Ukrainians currently possess more than 1.16 million firearms. According to him, there have been no reported crimes involving the use of weapons that were distributed to citizens at the start of the full-scale war.
This was stated by National Police Chief Ivan Vyhovsky in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.
Responding to a question about the number of unregistered weapons or so-called “trophies” in the hands of the population, Vyhovsky noted that it is currently difficult to determine an exact figure. At the same time, the scale of the problem is evident from the volume of seizures.
According to him, since the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022–2026, law enforcement agencies have seized nearly 20,000 weapons, including about 6,400 assault rifles, 4,500 rifled weapons, 3,400 converted firearms, and 2,400 other firearms.
Additionally, 2,800 grenade launchers, 63,000 grenades, 5.7 million rounds of ammunition, 6,400 kilograms of explosives, and 5,800 kilograms of gunpowder were seized.
“Well, as you can see, that’s quite a lot,” Vygivsky noted.
He explained that a significant portion of the weapons enters civilian circulation from frontline regions.
“Weapons and captured gear are taken from frontline regions, mostly transported by the military, and we seize these weapons every day,” he said.
According to the head of the National Police, the full-scale war has significantly impacted the crime situation in Ukraine and exacerbated public safety concerns.
At the same time, law enforcement agencies continue to work on preventing the illegal circulation of weapons. In particular, undercover purchases are being conducted to disrupt distribution channels, checkpoints are in operation, and weapons, ammunition, and explosives are systematically seized in cooperation with the military.
As of April 1, 2026, there were 812,000 registered owners of firearms and special equipment in Ukraine, who possess a total of 1,166,001 firearms and special equipment.
