Locations in Ukraine Where the Solar Eclipse on August 12 Can Be Viewed Have Been Announced
On August 12, 2026, residents of Europe will be able to observe the first total solar eclipse since 1999. In Ukraine, however, the astronomical event will be only partially visible, and in some regions, it will be visible for only a very short time or not at all due to sunset.
The total phase of the eclipse will occur only over part of Europe. Spain will be the epicenter of the event, where the maximum duration of the total phase will reach 2 minutes and 18 seconds. In particular, the Catalan authorities recommend the resort town of Altafulla as one of the best locations for viewing.
In Ukraine, the partial solar eclipse will begin in the evening, at approximately 8:14 p.m. Kyiv time. Residents of the western regions, particularly Lviv and Uzhhorod, will be able to observe it for the longest duration.
Estimated viewing times in Ukrainian cities:
- Kyiv — 8:14–8:23 p.m.;
- Vinnytsia — 8:16 p.m.–8:28 p.m.;
- Khmelnytskyi — 8:17 p.m.–8:34 p.m.;
- Chernivtsi — 8:19 p.m.–8:35 p.m.;
- Ternopil — 8:17 p.m.–8:40 p.m.;
- Rivne — 8:15 p.m.–8:40 p.m.;
- Ivano-Frankivsk — 8:18 p.m.–8:42 p.m.;
- Lviv — 8:17 p.m.–8:47 p.m.;
- Uzhhorod — 8:19 p.m.–8:51 p.m.
In Kyiv, the eclipse will last about nine minutes, while in Lviv and Uzhhorod, it will be visible for nearly half an hour. At the same time, the phenomenon will not be visible in Odesa, Kharkiv, and Dnipro, as the Sun will set below the horizon before the visible phase begins.
Those who are unable to observe the eclipse in person will be able to watch live streams provided by NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), the Royal Observatory Greenwich, and the Time and Date website on their official online platforms.
