Guards at the Kursk Detention Center Have Been Charged with Torturing Ukrainians
The Office of the Prosecutor General announced that two employees of Detention Center No. 1 of the Federal Penitentiary Service of the Russian Federation in the Kursk Region have been charged with cruel treatment of civilian prisoners. The investigation established that physical and psychological violence was systematically inflicted on Ukrainians who had been unlawfully deprived of their liberty and taken to the territory of the Russian Federation.
The suspects subjected the prisoners to electric shocks and tortured them with their hands, feet, and plastic batons. To date, instances of abuse involving at least five victims have been documented. The actions of the correctional facility staff have been classified under Part 1 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (violation of the laws and customs of war, committed by a group of persons acting in concert).

As a reminder, since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, at least 406 Ukrainian military personnel and civilians have died in Russian captivity. At the same time, Russian occupiers are subjecting Ukrainian prisoners of war to 695 different forms of torture.
The National Bank of Ukraine is putting into circulation a new commemorative 10-hryvnia coin titled “In Memory of Those Executed, Tortured, or Killed in Captivity.” It is dedicated to honoring the defenders of Ukraine—both men and women—as well as volunteers and civilians who fell victim to Russian captivity.
