Lake Velykyi Supiy in the Kyiv region is at risk of disappearing
Velykyi Supii, the largest artificial lake in the Kyiv region, is on the verge of disappearing due to widespread shallowing, dehydration, the dilapidated condition of its hydraulic structures, and uncontrolled water withdrawal. This was reported by “Glavkom,” citing comments from Ruslan Dyachenko, head of the Boryspil District State Administration, and Natalia Dzyuba, mayor of Yahotyn.
According to the mayor of Yahotyn, the water level in the 1,040-hectare reservoir has fallen to critical levels, the shoreline has receded by 10–30 meters, and the unique floating islands are running aground and crumbling. The environmental disaster is being exacerbated by the silting up of natural springs, the deterioration of the regulating sluices owned by the State Property Fund, excessive water extraction by farmers and fish farms, and the systematic plowing up of coastal protection strips.
Since this site of national importance is not under the jurisdiction of the local community, local authorities have officially appealed to the Cabinet of Ministers and relevant ministries, calling for Velykyi Supii to be included in national environmental protection programs. The artificial lake, created in 1765 by order of Hetman Kirill Razumovsky, is of strategic importance for the ecological balance and livelihoods of the entire region.
