After a record-breaking heat wave, Lviv was hit by a heavy downpour accompanied by gusty winds

Following the record-breaking heat that prevailed during the day on June 29, Lviv was hit by severe weather. A downpour began in the city, and gusty winds knocked down trees and damaged some buildings.

Due to strong gusts of wind, the effects of the storm are being reported in various parts of the city, including fallen trees and damage to roofs.

The storm hit Lviv after 3:30 p.m. Rain was first noticed in the city center.

Later, a heavy downpour hit the Shevchenkivskyi district of Lviv. A video shows how a literal wall of raindrops formed on the street.

Mayor Andriy Sadovyi also warned of the severe thunderstorm in Lviv. He urged residents and visitors to be cautious and not to take shelter under trees, billboards, or power lines.

"If possible, wait out the storm in a safe building," said the mayor of Lviv.

Later, Andriy Sadovyi spoke about the aftermath of the severe storm in Lviv. In particular, there were reports of fallen trees on Kopernik and Yefremov Streets.

“Near Franko Park, a tree fell on a trolleybus. A tree also fell near St. Yura Church, damaging the overhead wire system,” said the mayor.

In addition, there are breaks in the overhead wire system:

  • on Solomiya Krushelnytska Street;

  • at the Chornovil–Lypynsky Roundabout;

  • at the Stepan Bandera–Copernicus intersection;

  • near the “Soborna” stop on Ivan Franko Street.

Power has also been temporarily cut off on Lypynskoho Street, and a traffic light has fallen at the Varshavska–Tunelna intersection.

Strong winds also tore off part of the roof of the Shevchenkivskyi District Administration building and damaged the windows.

All city services are operational. As soon as weather conditions allow for safe work, we will begin cleanup efforts. If you see fallen trees, downed power lines, or other hazardous situations, please report them to the city’s hotline at 15-80,
” Sadovyi emphasized.

The mayor also reported that due to the effects of the storm, tram routes #1, 2, 3, 4, 8, and 9 are temporarily suspended. Andriy Sadovyi assured that tram service will resume once the fallen trees have been cleared and the overhead wires have been repaired.

In some areas of Lviv, there were also reports of hail.

In addition, some Telegram channels reported that the storm tore off the roof at the “Main Post Office” stop. Meanwhile, in some parts of the city, not a single drop of rain fell.

At 5:17 p.m., Andriy Sadovyi wrote that municipal services had already begun cleaning up after the storm.

"As of now, 30 fallen trees and 3 large branches have been recorded in the city. The Halytskyi district was hit the hardest, with 9 trees falling. In the Shevchenkivskyi district, seven trees were knocked down, the district administration building was damaged, and seven cars were damaged,” wrote the mayor of Lviv.

Crews are already cutting up the trees, clearing the roadways and sidewalks, restoring the power lines, and repairing other damage.
