Oleksandr Shestaka, a police officer from Donetsk Oblast who was seriously wounded on the front lines and completely lost his sight, was awarded the Order of Courage, 3rd Class.
The soldier received the award in Cherkasy, where he is currently undergoing rehabilitation after returning from the front lines. In addition to the state award, he was also granted a new special rank—police lieutenant colonel—ahead of schedule. Oleksandr Shestaka served in the Donetsk Oblast Police Rifle Battalion. Last year, during a rotation near Toretsk, he came under attack by a Russian FPV drone.

As a result of the explosion, the soldier completely lost his sight. He also suffered severe injuries to his arm and knee. Despite his serious injuries, the police officer continues to fight for his own recovery. That is why the award ceremony took place not at a military unit or on duty, but at a rehabilitation center.
In accordance with a decree by the President of Ukraine, the senior inspector of Company No. 1 of the Special Purpose Police Battalion of the Main Department of the National Police in Donetsk Oblast was awarded the Order “For Courage” of the III degree. During the ceremony, Oleksandr was also presented with a certificate for an elliptical trainer. It will help the soldier recover faster and maintain his physical fitness during rehabilitation.

The defender’s family was also recognized. Oleksandr’s father, Valerii Shestaka, was presented with a letter of appreciation for his many years of service in law enforcement and for raising his son.

Oleksandr Shestaka’s story is one of many stories of Ukrainian defenders who, after suffering severe injuries, are trying to return to an active life. Even after losing his sight, he continues to undergo treatment and rehabilitation. “For Courage” is one of Ukraine’s state awards, presented to military personnel, law enforcement officers, and civilians for personal bravery, self-sacrifice, and heroism.
