Damage to the Chernobyl shelter has increased the risk of the sarcophagus collapsing — Greenpeace

Damage to the protective shelter at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant increases the risk of the old sarcophagus collapsing onto the destroyed reactor.

This was reported by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

According to Greenpeace Ukraine, the sarcophagus needs to be dismantled, but this is currently impossible due to damage to the New Safe Confinement.

This refers to the consequences of a Russian drone attack in 2025, which damaged the protective dome.

Experts warn that without urgent repairs to the containment structure, the risk of collapse increases significantly.

Greenpeace emphasizes that the situation poses a threat to international efforts to address the consequences of the Chernobyl accident and requires an immediate response.

The French completedtheir assessment of the damage to the Chernobyl plant a year after the drone strike.

Currently, the Ukrainian National Guard is strengthening security at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and the exclusion zone. Additionally, cooperation with units of the Armed Forces is being intensified to ensure maximum security of the facilities.
