A decision regarding UPA heroes has worsened attitudes toward Ukrainians among 52% of Poles — RP

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s decision to name a unit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine after UPA heroes sparked a largely negative reaction in Polish society and led to a deterioration in Poles’ attitudes toward the neighboring country and its citizens.

The published data demonstrate a clear prevailing trend of dissatisfaction among foreign citizens due to this decision by the Ukrainian government.

During interviews, respondents were directly asked whether Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s decision to name a specific Special Operations Center “North” of the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine after UPA heroes had affected their personal attitude toward Ukraine and Ukrainians.

Sociologists noted that 51.9% of respondents said their attitude toward Ukraine and Ukrainians had worsened.

At the same time, for 31.9% of those surveyed, this matter did not affect their attitude toward Ukraine and Ukrainians, while 11.7% of respondents had no opinion on the matter.

Only a minimal share of 4.5% of respondents said their attitude toward Ukraine and Ukrainians had improved.

An in-depth analysis of the responses by various demographic characteristics revealed several important patterns.

In particular, Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s decision had a negative impact on perceptions of Ukraine and Ukrainians more often among men (59%) than among women (46%).

When examining trends by age group, a more negative attitude toward Ukraine and its citizens is most frequently reported by people under 24 (56%).

This indicates the presence of a significant historical and political taboo surrounding this topic among Polish youth and the male population.

This is evidenced by the official results of a sociological survey conducted by the specialized agency SW Research for the authoritative publication rp.pl.
