Ukraine’s full accession to the European Union is currently not feasible in the short term, but this goal remains a shared one for Kyiv and Berlin.

At the same time, Merz emphasized the need to accelerate reforms, particularly in the areas of anti-corruption and the rule of law.
He emphasized that this is not about “second-class” membership, but rather a gradual process of rapprochement, within which both Ukraine and the European Union must fulfill their obligations.
Germany, he said, aims to help Ukraine move step by step toward membership.
EU ambassadors do not support Ukraine’s accelerated membership.
