The $150,000 bribery attempt against judges was upheld

The Appeals Chamber of the High Anti-Corruption Court upheld the verdict in the case involving an attempt to bribe judges of the Kyiv Court of Appeals with $150,000. The two defendants received prison sentences and had their assets confiscated, according to the Office of the Prosecutor General.

The court confirmed that a former official of the Federation of Trade Unions of Ukraine, together with an accomplice, attempted to arrange the transfer of an unlawful benefit to the judges. They hoped this money would influence the decision to change the preventive measure and release one of the individuals from custody.

The court found both guilty of conspiring to provide unlawful benefits to public officials as part of a premeditated scheme by a group of individuals. They were each sentenced to four years in prison with the confiscation of half of their property, as well as the special confiscation of $150,000, which will be forfeited to the state. In the appeal, prosecutors demonstrated the validity of the verdict, so the court upheld the decision of the lower court and left the sentence unchanged.

At the same time, the panel clarified the role of one of the defendants—he was recognized as a perpetrator rather than an organizer of the crime. The other defendant also had the time spent under round-the-clock house arrest credited toward his sentence.

Earlier, officers of the Security Service of Ukraine neutralized a Russian agent who was preparing to blow up an administrative building of one of the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Zhytomyr.
