A Kyiv-based otolaryngologist is facing trial over a patient's loss of vision

A 65-year-old doctor at a private clinic is set to stand trial in Kyiv after his actions during a routine surgery resulted in the patient’s disability.

The Dnipro District Prosecutor’s Office has already filed an indictment with the court, charging the doctor with professional negligence.

The tragedy occurred during a routine procedure—a 50-year-old man was scheduled to have his nasal septum corrected and a cyst in his sinus removed.

However, after the procedure was completed, while under observation in the hospital, the patient discovered he had completely lost vision in one eye.

To establish the facts, a forensic medical examination was ordered, which confirmed a direct link between the doctor’s actions and the injury.

According to the experts’ findings, it was the mechanical damage caused during the procedures in the nasal cavity that led to the blindness.

The otolaryngologist’s actions were officially classified under Part 1 of Article 140 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The investigation insists that it was the medical professional’s negligent attitude toward his work during the surgical procedure that led to the serious consequences.

The case has now moved to court, where the specialist’s fate will be decided.

If found guilty, the doctor faces liability under the article that provides for punishment for a medical error that radically changed a person’s life.

Earlier, the SBU and the National Police thwarted another attempt by Russian special services to destabilize the situation in Kyiv. This time, an FSB agent was detained in the center of the capital while preparing to set fire to the building of the Institute of National Memory of Ukraine.

A Russian agent operating in the Kirovohrad region was sentenced to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property. Acting on orders from the Russian Federation, the perpetrator attempted to install a GPS tracker on a special vehicle accompanying convoys of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
