The court returned an educational building in downtown Lviv to the state
The academic building of the former University of Banking in downtown Lviv, which had previously been sold to a private company for 102 million hryvnias, has been returned to state ownership.
The decision was made following a lawsuit filed by the prosecutor’s office, which challenged the privatization of the property.
This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General.
The building in question, with an area of over 1,300 square meters, is an architectural landmark owned by the state, represented by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.
Prosecutors established that during the university’s reorganization, the property was unjustifiably transferred to a state scientific institution that did not actually use it. Subsequently, despite legal restrictions, the building was privatized by a limited liability company linked to the leadership of the Lviv Regional State Administration.
The privatization was allegedly justified by the lack of need for the premises, yet the needs of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv for educational spaces and dormitories were not taken into account.
Following a lawsuit filed by prosecutors from the Office of the Prosecutor General, the court overturned the State Property Fund’s decision, invalidated the purchase agreement, and ordered the building to be returned to the state. On March 26, 2026, the Kyiv Commercial Court fully upheld the prosecution’s claim, confirming the illegality of the privatization.
Thus, the educational facility in the center of Lviv has been returned to state ownership.
“This is educational property, which is state-owned and could not be alienated. Based on materials from the NACP, we identified violations during the sale and took legal action to protect the state’s interests. In court, prosecutors proved the illegality of the privatization, which led to the court’s decision to return the building to the state,” said Deputy Prosecutor General Viktor Logachov.
