July 1 Holiday: Ukraine Celebrates Investigator's Day
On July 1, Ukraine celebrates Investigator’s Day—a professional holiday for those who investigate criminal offenses and help uncover the truth. It is often their attentiveness, knowledge, and perseverance that determine whether the guilty will be found and whether justice will prevail. This is a great opportunity to thank everyone who works every day to ensure that the law is upheld and that crimes do not go unpunished.
Every year on July 1, Ukraine celebrates Investigator’s Day—a professional holiday for those engaged in the pre-trial investigation of criminal offenses. It is these specialists who gather evidence, establish the circumstances of crimes, and work with witnesses, victims, and suspects to ensure that every case is investigated objectively and in accordance with the law.

The holiday was established by Presidential Decree No. 922/98 of June 22, 1998. The decree took effect on July 1, making this date the official professional day for Ukrainian investigators. Its main purpose is to highlight the important role investigators play in the law enforcement system and to thank them for their daily work.
The work of an investigator remains one of the most responsible roles in the field of law enforcement. Investigators are among the first to begin work after a crime is reported. Their professionalism determines whether evidence can be properly gathered, all the circumstances of the case established, and the guilty parties brought to justice.

Investigators work not only in the National Police of Ukraine. Such units also exist in the Security Service of Ukraine, the State Bureau of Investigations, the Economic Security Bureau of Ukraine, as well as in other law enforcement agencies that conduct pre-trial investigations in accordance with their respective authorities. Each of these agencies specializes in different categories of cases—ranging from economic crimes to war crimes and crimes against national security.
Despite the popular image portrayed in detective movies, the profession of an investigator involves more than just arrests or high-profile special operations. A significant portion of the time is spent on painstaking work with documents, analyzing evidence, ordering expert examinations, preparing procedural documents, and collaborating with experts, prosecutors, and operational units. A good investigator must pay attention to even the smallest details. Sometimes a single minor detail can change the entire course of an investigation. That is why logical thinking, composure, the ability to analyze information, and the ability to make decisions even in complex situations are highly valued in this profession.

Recent years have been particularly challenging for Ukrainian investigators. Since the start of the full-scale war, they have been documenting the consequences of Russian aggression, collecting evidence of war crimes, working in de-occupied territories, and recording instances of destruction, torture, unlawful detentions, and killings of civilians. This work often takes place in dangerous conditions and is of great importance for the future of international justice.

The profession requires not only legal knowledge but also psychological resilience. Investigators have to deal with complex human stories, witness the consequences of serious crimes, and interact with victims and their families. At the same time, they must remain impartial and act strictly within the law. On Investigator’s Day, various law enforcement agencies traditionally honor their best employees. They are presented with departmental awards, certificates, letters of appreciation, and special honors for their professionalism and dedicated service. Colleagues congratulate one another, and leadership expresses gratitude for their responsible work and dedication to the profession.

For many, this day is yet another opportunity to reflect on how important the honest and professional work of investigators is. It is they who help uncover the truth where others try to hide it, and do everything possible to ensure that every case is investigated fairly. As law enforcement officers themselves say, “the truth is made up of details.” That is why attentiveness, patience, and professionalism remain the key qualities of a good investigator.

On this professional holiday, we wish Ukrainian investigators resilience, wisdom, fair decisions, good health, and strength. After all, behind every closed case lie hours of intense work, a sense of responsibility toward the people, and a sincere desire to make society safer. It is thanks to such professionals that the law works not only on paper but also in real life.
