Holiday June 24: Orthodox and Greek Catholics celebrate John the Baptist Day

On June 24 according to the New Julian calendar, Orthodox and Greek Catholic Christians in Ukraine celebrate the Nativity of John the Forerunner, or John the Baptist. This is one of the few church holidays that commemorates not the saint’s death, but his birth.

John the Forerunner is considered the man who prepared the people for the coming of Jesus Christ and performed His baptism in the waters of the Jordan River. That is why this holiday holds special significance for millions of believers around the world.

John the Forerunner, also known as John the Baptist, is one of the most revered figures in Christianity. His name is mentioned not only in the Bible but also in many historical sources. The Church calls him the Forerunner, that is, the one who came before Christ and announced to the people the coming of the Savior.

According to the Gospel, John was born to the priest Zechariah and the righteous Elizabeth. The couple had been childless for a long time and were already advanced in age. The birth of their son was a true miracle for them. That is why the Nativity of John the Forerunner holds a special status. In the church calendar, only a few people are honored with a separate feast day commemorating their birth. Among them are Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, and John the Baptist. People used to say of him: “John was born to show people the way to God.”

Why is the holiday celebrated on June 24?

The date is linked to the biblical story. The Gospel states that John was about six months older than Jesus. Therefore, his birth is celebrated exactly half a year before Christmas.

After most Ukrainian churches switched to the New Julian calendar, the date of the celebration shifted. Now, the Nativity of John the Baptist is celebrated on June 24. Previously, according to the old style, the holiday fell on July 7. For many Ukrainians, this date is also associated with the festival of Ivan Kupala, as folk traditions have been intertwined with church traditions for centuries.

How This Holiday Came to Be

The veneration of John the Baptist dates back to the early centuries of Christianity. As early as the 4th century, Christians celebrated his birth on a separate day. For the Church, this is not merely a commemoration of a historical event. It is a reminder of the human calling to be honest, just, and ready to speak the truth even when it is dangerous.

John the Baptist was exactly that. He openly criticized injustice and called people to repentance. He ultimately paid for his candor with his life. That is why he is honored as a prophet, a martyr, and a spiritual mentor.

What traditions are observed on this day

For believers, this day begins with prayer and a visit to church. Many churches hold solemn services during which passages from the Gospel about the saint’s birth are read. People pray for the health of their loved ones, ask for God’s blessing, and give thanks for support in their lives. People especially often turn to John the Baptist with requests for spiritual strength and guidance on the right path in life.

In some regions of Ukraine, folk traditions have also been preserved. In the past, people would gather medicinal herbs on this day, as they believed that they possessed the greatest healing power at the end of June. Our ancestors also kept a close eye on the weather. They used to say, “Whatever the weather is on St. John’s Day, that’s how the summer will be.” Or, “Dew on St. John’s Day means a bountiful harvest.”

Connection to the Festival of Ivan Kupala

Because the dates are so close, many people confuse the church holiday with the folk holiday of Kupala. In fact, they have different origins. The Nativity of John the Baptist is a Christian holiday dedicated to the saint’s birth. Ivan Kupala, on the other hand, dates back to pagan times and is associated with the sun, water, fire, and the summer solstice.
