Holiday on October 4, 2026 — Ukraine’s Territorial Defense Day: History and Significance

On October 4, 2026, Ukraine will celebrate Ukraine’s Territorial Defense Day. This professional holiday was established in 2020 to recognize the role of territorial defense in protecting the state and its territorial integrity. The date is set for the first Sunday in October, so it changes every year.

Ukraine’s Territorial Defense Day falls on the first Sunday of October each year. In 2026, it will be October 4. The date is official and was established by Decree of the President of Ukraine No. 417/2020 dated September 30, 2020. The decree states that the holiday was established in recognition of the importance of territorial defense for Ukraine’s defense capability and territorial integrity.

Therefore, Territorial Defense Day does not have a fixed calendar date, unlike, for example, Ukraine’s Independence Day. It falls on a different day each year but is always observed on the first Sunday in October. In 2025, it was celebrated on October 5, and in 2026, on October 4. Next year, the date will change again.

How the Holiday Came to Be

Ukraine’s Territorial Defense Day was officially established in 2020. Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed the corresponding decree on September 30, 2020. The document stipulated that the holiday would be observed annually on the first Sunday in October. Among the reasons cited in the decree for its establishment were the importance of territorial defense for the country’s defense capability, as well as the role of various components of the security and defense sector.

The document also emphasized the need to develop modern military traditions. In other words, this holiday was created not only as a professional observance for the military. It is intended to serve as a reminder of the country’s entire defense system, which encompasses the defense forces, reserve training, and the protection of specific territories. At the same time, it is important not to confuse the date the holiday was established with the date the Territorial Defense Forces were created as a separate branch of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Territorial Defense Forces Day was established in 2020, while the new separate branch began to be deployed on January 1, 2022. That is why the history of the modern Territorial Defense Forces consists of several stages.

What Is Territorial Defense

Territorial defense is a system of measures aimed at protecting Ukraine, its population, key facilities, and territories. In the modern Ukrainian army, this mission is carried out by the Territorial Defense Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. They constitute a separate branch of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Their deployment began on January 1, 2022, pursuant to the Law of Ukraine “On the Fundamentals of National Resistance.”

Що таке територіальна оборона

But the very idea of territorial defense in Ukraine emerged much earlier. After the start of Russian aggression in 2014, territorial defense battalions were formed within the Land Forces. Subsequently, the system began to be restructured to make it more organized and effective. In 2020, the Territorial Defense Command was established within the structure of the Army Command. In 2018, Ukraine also began forming territorial defense brigades. For example, the 120th Separate Territorial Defense Brigade was formed in Vinnytsia in July 2018, and the 119th Brigade in the Chernihiv region in March of that same year. This shows that the transition to the modern territorial defense structure began even before the creation of a separate branch of the armed forces in 2022.

What Changed in 2022

A new phase for territorial defense began on January 1, 2022. It was then that the Territorial Defense Forces officially began operating as a separate branch of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The plan called for the creation of brigades in the regions and battalions at the district level. Regional commands were also formed to coordinate the work of the units.

A few weeks later, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. For the Territorial Defense Forces, this became a test—no longer in training exercises, but in real combat conditions. On February 24, 2022, Ukrainians of all ages and professions joined the territorial defense units en masse. Among them were farmers, entrepreneurs, journalists, construction workers, programmers, and representatives of other professions.

According to the Territorial Defense Forces, over 110,000 soldiers joined their ranks during the first month of the full-scale invasion. Territorial Defense Forces units participated in the defense of the Kyiv, Chernihiv, and Sumy regions, and later fought on other fronts. Therefore, after February 24, 2022, the concept of territorial defense took on a much broader meaning for many Ukrainians. It was no longer just about preparing for potential threats in one’s own region, but about direct participation in combat operations. Some Territorial Defense Forces units continue to carry out combat missions on the front lines.

How Many Brigades Are There in the Territorial Defense Forces?

Today, the Territorial Defense Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine consist of 24 brigades. They cover various regions of Ukraine and have their own battalions and support units. The structure of a specific brigade may vary depending on its missions. The units include headquarters, battalions, reconnaissance and engineering units, communications, medical services, logistics, and other components. For example, the 112th Separate Territorial Defense Brigade, which operates in Kyiv, has separate battalions, a reconnaissance company, a communications company, logistics units, and an anti-aircraft platoon.

Individual brigades have their own combat history. For example, after the start of the full-scale invasion, the 120th Brigade carried out missions in the Vinnytsia region, specifically securing sections of the state border, and was later deployed as part of the Kyiv Defense Force.

Who Serves in Territorial Defense

One of the distinctive features of the Territorial Defense Forces is that people with very diverse life and professional experiences have joined its units. Military personnel with extensive experience have served and continue to serve here, as well as people who worked in civilian professions before the war. Among them are medical professionals, engineers, drivers, teachers, entrepreneurs, IT specialists, journalists, and representatives of the creative professions. In their publications, the Territorial Defense Forces specifically mention doctors of science, farmers, singers, programmers, and other specialists who have stepped up to defend the country.

This is one of the reasons why territorial defense is often perceived as a military force closely tied to specific communities. People are not defending an abstract territory, but rather the cities, villages, roads, and places they know well. At the same time, after the start of full-scale war, the missions of many units have extended far beyond the borders of their home regions.

What Tasks Do the Territorial Defense Forces Perform?

The tasks of territorial defense are not limited to direct participation in combat on the front lines. Units may carry out missions to protect critical infrastructure, secure territories, counter sabotage threats, ensure the defense of populated areas, and support other components of the Defense Forces. Brigades include units responsible for intelligence, communications, engineering support, medical care, logistics, and fire support. This structure allows a brigade to carry out a variety of tasks rather than operating solely as a conventional infantry unit.

After the outbreak of the full-scale war, the capabilities of the Territorial Defense Forces also gradually evolved. Units gained combat experience and acquired new weapons and equipment. Modern technologies became a key focus, particularly the use of drones and the development of reconnaissance capabilities.

How Territorial Defense Day Is Observed

Ukraine’s Territorial Defense Day is primarily a military-professional observance. On this day, service members and veterans associated with territorial defense are honored. Military units may hold ceremonial events, parades, award ceremonies, and tributes to service members. Special attention is given to those who died while defending Ukraine. On this day, fallen service members are remembered and their memory is honored. For many units, this is not just a formal date on the calendar, but an opportunity to remember their comrades who did not return from the war.

Also on Defense Forces Day, military personnel meet with community representatives, veterans, and volunteers. In various cities, exhibitions of military equipment, unit presentations, themed events, and meetings with service members may be organized. The specific format depends on available resources and the security situation. Due to the war, large-scale public events are not a mandatory part of the holiday. Safety remains the top priority. Therefore, today Territorial Defense Day is most often observed through official greetings, military ceremonies, award ceremonies, and informational events.

Interesting Facts About Territorial Defense

  • The history of modern territorial defense began even before the full-scale invasion. The first brigades in the current system began to be formed as early as 2018. For example, the 119th Separate Territorial Defense Brigade in the Chernihiv region was established following the reorganization of the territorial defense units that had existed in the region.

  • Another important fact is that the Territorial Defense Forces are the youngest separate branch of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Their official deployment began only on January 1, 2022. Within just a few weeks, the units found themselves in the midst of a full-scale war.

  • During the first month of the major war, more than 110,000 people joined the Territorial Defense Forces. For many of them, this was their first experience of military service. At the same time, it is precisely this diversity of people that has become one of the defining characteristics of the Territorial Defense Forces.

  • Another interesting point is the difference between the holiday and the military formation itself. Territorial Defense Day has existed since 2020, while the Territorial Defense Forces, as a separate branch of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, have existed since 2022. In other words, the state first officially established a day dedicated to territorial defense, and only later was the modern structure of the Territorial Defense Forces created.

Why This Day Is Important

Territorial Defense is part of Ukraine’s overall defense system. Its missions involve not only the military on the front lines but also the protection of territories and communities. The full-scale invasion demonstrated that Territorial Defense units can find themselves directly in combat zones and carry out complex combat missions. Territorial Defense Day also serves as a reminder of the people who, at a critical moment, left their civilian jobs to join the defense of the country. For some, military service became a continuation of their professional path, while for others, it marked the beginning of an entirely new life.
