Top 10 Countries: Which Countries Do International Students Most Often Come From to Study in Ukraine

Foreign students continue their studies in Ukraine despite the full-scale war. The largest groups among them are citizens of India, Turkmenistan, China, Morocco, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Nigeria, Iran, Israel, and Uzbekistan. The Ukrainian government is keen for these students to remain in the country to work after they complete their studies.

Natalia Naumenko, head of the State Migration Service, spoke about this in an interview with Glavkom.

At the same time, Natalia Naumenko noted that foreign students have become less and less interested in studying in Ukraine. This is also linked to the COVID-19 pandemic and the start of full-scale war.

“As of today, according to our data, there are about 7,000 foreigners studying in Ukraine, which is less than 10% of the pre-war figures,” Naumenko said.

“Prospective students also come to Ukraine on D-type visas, but this visa is intended for education, not work. Currently, we are interested in ensuring that foreigners who complete their studies in Ukraine find employment here. Therefore, state policy is aimed at giving them the time and opportunities to find their place in the Ukrainian labor market after receiving their diplomas. These students have studied here for five years, are familiar with the environment in which they find themselves, and are competitive in our labor market,” the official explained.

It should be noted that Lidiya Tkachenko, a leading research fellow at the M.V. Ptukha Institute of Demography and Social Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and a candidate of economic sciences, believes that labor migrants are unlikely to come to Ukraine in the near future.

Large migration flows and declining birth rates during a full-scale war are exacerbating the demographic crisis in Ukraine year after year.
