Three Ukrainian regional centers face flood risk amid climate change

Three regional centers in Ukraine are at risk of flooding due to global increases in average annual temperatures expected by the end of summer. According to Yevheniy Zavadskyi, a climate advisor in Ukraine, global warming reaching 1.5°C will likely cause floods that threaten homes and infrastructure in these cities. This highlights the urgent need to address climate change impacts and plan effective adaptation measures.

Under the Paris Agreement, the global community must reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Failure to meet these targets could result in a temperature rise of 3-5°C by 2100, even without direct human influence, leading to widespread ecological and social disruptions. These changes threaten not only flooding but significant disturbances to water supply, agriculture, and overall livelihoods in Ukraine.

The coming years will be crucial in implementing mitigation and adaptation strategies to climate risks; otherwise, the consequences could be catastrophic for these and other regions in Ukraine.
