In Gadyach, a fire destroyed a synagogue near the burial site of the founder of Chabad

Chief Rabbi of Ukraine Moshe Reuven Asman visited the pilgrimage complex in the city of Hadyach in the Poltava region, where a massive fire broke out late in the evening on July 24. The fire almost completely destroyed the central building of the “Admor Azaken” (“Rabbeinu HaGadol”) complex, engulfing the main synagogue, the banquet hall, the kitchen, and the visitor reception area. Law enforcement officials are currently investigating the cause of the fire.

People who were inside the building when the fire broke out were able to evacuate in time and salvage some of their valuables. No one was injured in the incident. Preliminary estimates put the property damage at millions of dollars, and law enforcement is considering a malfunction in the electrical system as one of the possible causes of the fire.

Despite the destruction, representatives of the Jewish community and the complex’s administration have already announced plans to completely rebuild and restore the synagogue.

As a result of a nighttime strike on Odesa, one of the city’s oldest Jewish landmarks—the “Nachlas Eliezer” synagogue in Peresyp—was damaged.
