In the village of Huta-Peniyatska in the Lviv region, search operations have been completed at the site of a mass grave containing victims of the events of 1944. Archaeologists have discovered a mass grave where several hundred people may be buried.

During their investigations, experts surveyed approximately 4,000 square meters of the former village’s territory and found the foundation of a church, next to which lies a burial site covering about 70 square meters.

According to preliminary estimates, the grave may contain the remains of several hundred victims. The exact number of victims is expected to be determined during the exhumation process.

The exhumation has been postponed until spring 2027 due to the need to obtain all necessary permits. Once the investigations are complete, the remains are to be reburied.

Joint Ukrainian-Polish search operations in Huta Peniatska began on June 8. Their goal is to locate the burial sites of village residents who were killed in February 1944.
