A man was sentenced in Kyiv for raping his mentally ill stepdaughter
In the Obolon district of Kyiv, a 50-year-old man was found guilty of raping his 22-year-old stepdaughter, who has a mental disorder and perceives reality as a child would, and was sentenced to 8 years in prison.
The crime came to light after the young woman became pregnant and gave birth to a child; a paternity test confirmed that the stepfather, who had been living with the family since 2019, was the father. During the trial, the defendant denied his guilt and claimed the act was consensual; however, witness testimony and the case file confirmed the victim’s helpless state.
The prosecutor sought a 10-year prison sentence for the defendant, but the court sentenced him to 8 years in prison. Immediately after the verdict was announced, the man attempted to injure himself with an object resembling a knife, after which he was taken into custody in the courtroom, and the family placed the newborn child up for adoption.
