In Kyiv, a married couple of lawyers made millions of hryvnias by falsely claiming to care for relatives
Law enforcement officials in the capital have uncovered a large-scale scheme to evade mobilization, organized by two experienced lawyers in collaboration with an employee of the district state administration.
The perpetrators helped men of draft age obtain fake documents certifying the need for constant care of relatives in order to travel abroad.
The organizer of the illegal operation turned out to be a 57-year-old man who had enlisted his own wife and an official from the Department of Social and Veterans’ Policy in the scheme.
To give the scheme the appearance of legitimacy, the operators disguised their activities as legitimate legal services and even forced clients to sign official contracts.
The cost of the full package of fake documents was $7,000 per person.
For this fee, the suspects provided full “support,” which included finding grounds for deferment and directly producing the necessary documents through connections at the Regional State Administration.
One of the documented cases is striking in its cynicism: they found a woman for a client who agreed to a sham marriage and to feign a severe mental illness.
Just one month after the wedding, the “newlyweds” received an official certificate stating the need for constant outside care for the wife, without any actual medical examinations.
The accomplices were caught red-handed during the transfer of the final installment of the agreed-upon payment.
During searches of the suspects’ premises, detailed rough notes were seized, listing the names of dozens of clients and the amounts of money received from them.
Investigators determined that dozens of people who were trying to avoid military service had used the group’s services.
Law enforcement officials are currently reviewing the seized documentation to bring all participants and clients of the illegal services to justice.
