Representative of language ombudsman: Kyiv is seeing a return to Russian language
According to Serhiy Syrotenko, Deputy Head of the Secretariat of the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language, there is a return to the use of the Russian language in Kyiv. In 2023, Ukraine generally showed positive dynamics in the use of the Ukrainian language, which was due to the public reaction to Russian aggression. However, data from 2024 showed a decline, indicating a slowdown in the process of Ukrainization.

The latest study by the Office of the Language Ombudsman in 2025 found a slight improvement in the overall use of the Ukrainian language, especially in the educational process, but parents and children are increasingly using Russian, which raises concerns about the situation in Kyiv. It was noted that the tolerance of the Russian language in the capital is growing again, and it is no longer socially unacceptable, as it was perceived during the active hostilities in 2022-2023.
