Major emergency repair work has been completed at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra following the Russian strike that damaged the Cathedral of the Dormition. Rescue workers from the State Emergency Service worked for over a week to secure the roof and prevent further damage. Currently, 100% of the planned work has been completed.

On the night of June 15, a Russian strike damaged one of Ukraine’s most famous religious sites—the Assumption Cathedral at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. Andriy Danik, head of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, called this attack yet another example of how the war is taking a toll on the country’s cultural and spiritual heritage.

According to him, rescue workers began operations on site immediately after the strike. For over a week, they worked under conditions where every decision was made with due consideration for the risk of new attacks and the complexity of the shrine’s structure. “On the night of June 15, Russia once again revealed its true nature—by striking one of Ukraine’s most important holy sites, the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra,” Andriy Danik noted.

The strike damaged the roof of the Assumption Cathedral—a place of special significance to millions of Ukrainians as a symbol of faith, history, and spirituality. “Immediately after the strike, rescuers from the State Emergency Service sprang into action. For over a week, they worked in a place where every meter is of special value,” the statement reads.

Specialists carried out emergency restoration work to stabilize the structure and prevent further damage. The work was carried out under difficult conditions and under the constant threat of repeat attacks. As of June 23, the main phase of restoration has been completed. The damaged roof has been fully preserved, which means that 100% of the planned work has been completed. “Today, the repair and restoration work to preserve the damaged roof has been completed. The work has been completed to 100% of the planned scope,” said the head of the State Emergency Service.

At the same time, heat guns continue to operate at the site to dry out the cathedral’s structural elements and interior spaces. More than 100 rescue workers from various units and over 25 pieces of equipment were involved in the operation. It was a lengthy and complex operation aimed at preserving one of the country’s key spiritual landmarks. “Behind the dry statistics are people. Those who do not seek glory, but who protect what is most precious every day—life, cultural heritage, and the future of Ukraine,” Danik emphasized.

The State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES) emphasizes that these efforts serve as an example of how, in wartime, it is necessary to simultaneously rescue both people and cultural symbols that are significant to the entire country. This was reported by the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.

As a reminder, Russia attacked the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, causing a fire.

Prior to that, Russian cruise missiles struck the Zaporizhzhia region, resulting in injuries.

As a result of the Russian attack on Kharkiv, five State Emergency Service rescuers were killed.
