The Kremlin says it is important to hold presidential elections in Ukraine

Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov stated on March 24 that the issue of holding presidential elections in Ukraine remains relevant, despite the ongoing war.

This is reported by Russian media.

According to Peskov, the Ukrainian authorities must independently determine the mechanisms for legitimizing the extension of the head of state’s term. Peskov also noted that the Kremlin has not heard any official statements regarding the cancellation of the 2026 elections in Ukraine, viewing reports about the impossibility of holding them as mere speculation in the press.

Meanwhile, First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Oleksandr Kornienko stated that holding elections in Ukraine during a full-scale war is impossible. At the same time, parliament still needs to determine the voting procedure for military personnel and Ukrainians abroad, as well as prepare for the first post-war national elections.

It should be noted that the majority of Ukrainians oppose holding elections until the war is fully over.

As a reminder, in early March, approval ratings for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy rose by 9% compared to February—he is supported by 62% of those surveyed.
