A massive data breach involving government registries has been uncovered in Lithuania

A large-scale cyberattack on government registries has been reported in Lithuania, which may have resulted in the theft of hundreds of thousands of confidential records. Investigators are looking into the possibility that Russian intelligence agencies were involved and are already assessing the extent of the data breach. This was reported by Delfi.

An investigation is underway in Lithuania into a massive data leak from government registries after attackers gained unauthorized access to internal systems and, according to preliminary estimates, may have copied over 600,000 records containing confidential information. The investigation is being conducted by the Lithuanian Criminal Police Bureau in cooperation with a number of government agencies, including the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Economy and Innovation, and the State Security Department.

Investigators have determined that access to the databases was not limited to foreign sources, as the attackers were able to exploit internal digital systems of certain Lithuanian institutions, which significantly complicates the assessment of the full scale of the incident.

According to preliminary data, the key channel of the leak may have been the system of the Migration Department under the Ministry of the Interior, through which mass queries were sent to the Registry Center, allowing access to significant amounts of information. Lithuanian MP Laurynas Kaščiūnas stated that the stolen data may include information on military personnel, intelligence officers, politicians, civil servants, and other categories of individuals for whom address information is critically sensitive.

He emphasized that the leak of addresses could have serious consequences, as such information could become a tool for pressure, intimidation, or even recruitment: “The leak of addresses can be used for pressure or intimidation—for example, an address is published online, inciting violence, making threats, or exerting other pressure, both on the individual and on their family members.”

Experts also emphasize that such data allows for tracking officials’ daily routes, studying their lifestyles and contacts, and creating conditions for physical surveillance or technical intrusion into private spaces.

It is specifically noted that precise geolocation data can be used for cyberattacks on home networks and devices, making such leaks particularly dangerous for national security.

Currently, Lithuanian authorities are conducting an audit of all state information systems in an effort to identify vulnerabilities and prevent further data leaks.
