In Mykolaiv, schools will operate in shelters in two shifts
In Mykolaiv, plans are being made to organize the new school year with the security situation in mind. Due to ongoing Russian attacks, classes may be held entirely in shelters, instruction will take place in two shifts, and the start of classes may be moved to 7:30 a.m.
Anna Lychko, head of the Department of Education, noted that due to the increasing number of attacks by “Shahed”-type rocket-powered drones, the possibility of conducting classes directly in shelters is being considered.
The preliminary plan is for elementary school students to attend the first shift, and students in grades 5–11 to attend the second shift, if possible.
City officials are also exploring an option under which classes would begin as early as 7:30 a.m. This schedule would allow for the most efficient use of shelters and ensure that a larger number of children can attend school.
At the same time, the final schedule for each school will depend on the capacity of the shelters.
“The city’s priority is the safety of children and teachers, so this year’s educational process will be organized with due consideration for the security situation and the capabilities of each school,” the Mykolaiv City Council emphasized.
This was reported by the Mykolaiv City Council following a staff meeting dedicated to preparations for the new school year.
As a reminder, a Russian strike on July 19 destroyed more than 410,000 Ukrainian school textbooks that were already being prepared for shipment to schools. As a result, some of the books will have to be reprinted, and their delivery to schools will be delayed by at least several months.
Despite the losses, the Ministry of Education assures that it will do everything possible to print a new batch as quickly as possible and provide students with the necessary textbooks. At the same time, schools are advised to use digital versions of educational materials if necessary until the printing and delivery of the new books are completed.
