Cleanup efforts to address the sunflower oil spill are underway at the port of Chornomorsk – booms have been deployed

The State Enterprise "Maritime Ports Administration" is taking measures to clean up sunflower oil pollution in the waters of the port of Chornomorsk. The first row of boom barriers has already been installed on site.

The USPA reported this on Telegram.

“As of now, the specialized fleet of the Chornomorsk branch of the State Enterprise ‘USPA’ (oil spill recovery vessels), booms, a Lamor skimmer for collecting pollutants, as well as specialized vehicles for pumping out the contamination,” the statement reads.

Work to mitigate the consequences of the sunflower oil spill within the port and in the water area began following the shelling on April 26, 2026.

Following an initial inspection, specialists from the Black Sea Branch of the USPA shut off the storm sewer system to prevent further contamination from entering the water and the municipal system. The first line of boom barriers has also been installed. The port operator contained the spill by creating sand barriers around the storm sewer network and in the directions of the pollution’s spread.

It is noted that the Seaport Administration is in constant contact with the State Environmental Inspection and other relevant agencies.

As a reminder, in Chornomorsk, thousands of tons of oil spilled into the sea as a result of a Russian strike.

In the Dnipropetrovsk region, police came under fire while evacuating people.

Nighttime shelling of Ukraine: an approximate route of missiles and drones has been identified.

The shelling of Kherson on April 11 claimed the life of yet another woman.
