A gang of extortionists was arrested in Sumy: a cache of weapons was found in their possession
In Sumy, law enforcement officers detained a 37-year-old man suspected of organizing a criminal group that engaged in extortion using violence.
According to the investigation, early this year, the victim was lured into a trap under the pretext of a meeting. There, three of the attacker’s accomplices beat the man, took him outside the city, and stole more than 200,000 hryvnias and valuables from him. Afterward, the perpetrators demanded an additional 100,000 hryvnias and, subsequently, monthly payments of 1,000 U.S. dollars.
During a special operation, law enforcement officers located the mastermind behind the scheme and arrested him. Additionally, during searches of his property, they discovered a cache containing a large quantity of ammunition, firearms, and explosives.
The suspect was notified of charges under Part 4 of Article 187 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (robbery). The investigation is ongoing, and law enforcement officials are determining the roles of other members of the group.
