The strike on Starobilsk may not have hit the dormitory

The strike on Starobilsk may not have hit the dormitory

New details have emerged online regarding the drone strike on the occupied city of Starobilsk in the Luhansk region. According to information currently being widely discussed in open sources, the Russian “Rubicon” unit may have been stationed in the building of the Starobilsk Vocational College, where classes had allegedly been switched to an online format in advance.

At the same time, the casualties reported after the attack, according to preliminary information, may not have been in the college itself, but in the dormitory of the nearby teacher training college. There is currently no final official confirmation of all the details, but the new facts significantly alter the picture of what happened.

According to information circulating on social media and among military analysts, the Russian military may have used the Starobilsk Vocational College building as a base for the “Rubicon” unit. This refers to a Russian unit linked to drones and military operations in the occupied territories.

Particular attention is now being paid to the fact that students at this educational institution had previously been switched to distance learning. This has become one of the main arguments of those who claim that there may not have been any civilian children in the building at the time of the strike.

At the same time, students from the Starobilsk Pedagogical College appeared on the lists of those killed in the attack. According to preliminary data, they were in a nearby dormitory. This is why a theory is now being discussed that one of the drones may have struck a neighboring building—either due to a misidentification or accidentally during the attack. Reports also note that a total of four drones were used. The main strike was likely aimed specifically at the Russian military’s base. “This no longer looks like mere speculation. Too many details match up,” write the authors of posts analyzing the situation surrounding the strike.

So far, the Ukrainian side has not officially commented on the new information regarding the deployment of Russian troops at the college. Likewise, there is no confirmation from the occupation administration regarding the use of the educational institution for military purposes.

At the same time, the practice of stationing Russian units in civilian buildings—such as schools, dormitories, hospitals, or colleges—is not new in the occupied territories. Ukrainian military officials and international human rights organizations have repeatedly reported similar cases during the war.

The situation around Starobilsk is currently sparking much debate precisely because of reports about the possible presence of Russian troops in the educational institution. If this information is officially confirmed, it could explain why the building was targeted.

At the same time, experts emphasize that in such cases, it is important to wait for confirmed facts and the results of investigations, as information from the occupied territories often comes in fragments and is subject to change.
