Ukraine has provided Romania with a response regarding the explosion of a maritime drone in Constanța

Ukraine has officially responded to Romania’s written inquiry regarding the incident involving a maritime drone that accidentally entered the port of Constanța and exploded. The Ukrainian side provided an explanation of the circumstances of the incident to the Romanian authorities.

The Romanian Ministry of Defense reported that it had received responses from its Ukrainian counterparts to 14 questions posed by the Minister of Defense regarding the incident involving the Ukrainian maritime drone that exploded in the port of Constanța on June 5.

The response states that in the afternoon of June 4, Ukrainian operators lost contact with four “Sargan-3000” maritime drones while they were in the area of Russian-occupied Sevastopol, heading toward the eastern part of the Black Sea. After that, Ukrainian operators were unable to reestablish contact with the drones and could no longer control their movement.

At 9:54 a.m. on June 5, the Ukrainian Navy informed its Romanian counterparts of the threat that the off-course drones could pose in the event of self-detonation, and provided the estimated time frames for their self-destruction, explaining that due to the loss of communication, they were unable to cancel the scheduled detonation.

“According to the Ukrainian side, this was an isolated incident, most likely caused by the Russian Federation’s electronic warfare systems,” the Romanian Ministry of Defense noted.

For their part, they asked Ukraine to establish a permanent communication channel between the naval forces. Operational procedures were established for informing each other about potential risks in the Black Sea.

“The Minister of National Defense also officially requested that the Ukrainian side program all maritime drones launched into the Black Sea so that they automatically detonate in safe zones, outside Romania’s areas of interest, if they end up there for any reason,” the statement added.

Earlier, the German company Quantum Systems unveiled its new multifunctional aviation platform, the Pulse P19, at the ILA airshow in Berlin. Externally, the design resembles World War II-era fighter jets, but its key feature is the capability for autonomous, unmanned operation, which makes the system far more technologically advanced than it might seem at first glance.
