Ukraine has opened a new border crossing into Romania
Ukraine has opened a new road border crossing on the border with Romania. The “Bila Tserkva–Sighetu Marmatiei” border crossing in Zakarpattia Oblast will operate around the clock and will use temporary infrastructure for the time being. Passenger vehicles weighing up to 3.5 metric tons will be able to pass through it.
A new border crossing has opened on the Ukrainian-Romanian border. The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved the decision to open the “Bila Tserkva–Sighetu Marmatiei” international road border crossing. The checkpoint is located in Zakarpattia Oblast and will connect the Ukrainian village of Bila Tserkva with the Romanian city of Sighetu Marmatiei. The government approved the decision to open it on September 17.
The new checkpoint will operate around the clock with no restrictions on operating hours. However, temporary infrastructure will be used there during the initial phase. Passenger vehicles with a maximum allowable weight not exceeding 3.5 metric tons will be permitted to cross the checkpoint. This primarily refers to passenger cars and other passenger vehicles that meet the established weight limit.
For now, the checkpoint will operate as part of the project to build a permanent complex. This refers to the project “Construction of an international border crossing on the Ukrainian-Romanian state border between the towns of Bila Tserkva (Ukraine) and Sighetu Marmatiei (Romania), including access roads to the highway border bridge in Zakarpattia Oblast.” In other words, the current infrastructure is temporary. Once construction of the permanent border crossing point is complete, operations will be organized at the new complex.
The government has also instructed the State Border Guard Service and the State Customs Service to ensure the operation of their units at the new border crossing point. It will be the border guards and customs officers who will conduct the necessary checks of people and vehicles as they cross the border. The opening of the new checkpoint is expected to add another route for crossing the Ukrainian-Romanian border. This could be particularly important during periods when the number of vehicles increases at other checkpoints and lines form.
Currently, the “Bila Tserkva–Sighetu Marmației” checkpoint will operate on a permanent, round-the-clock basis. Crossing the border through this checkpoint will be available to passenger vehicles that meet the established weight limits. This information is based on a government resolution dated September 17.
