Ukraine has appealed to the UN Security Council with an urgent call for a ceasefire

Ukraine has appealed to the UN Security Council with an urgent call for a ceasefire

Ukraine has called on the members of the UN Security Council to consider a draft resolution on an unconditional ceasefire as soon as possible. In addition, the Ukrainian side emphasized the importance of increasing military aid and stepping up international pressure on Russia.

"The UN Security Council’s paralysis regarding Russia’s crimes must be ended by the international community, which still respects the rules-based international order. Therefore, we once again call on Security Council members to immediately submit a draft resolution on an immediate and unconditional ceasefire,” Pavlichenko stated.

According to him, the adoption of such a document “will clearly demonstrate support for the restoration of a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in Ukraine.”

In addition, the diplomat called on international partners to continue providing military support to Ukraine.

“This is not an escalation, but the only effective strategy for restoring peace and saving lives,” emphasized Ukraine’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN.

It is noted that on Thursday, July 9, the UN Security Council held an emergency meeting at Ukraine’s request in connection with the latest Russian attacks on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities. Prior to the meeting, the Ukrainian side stressed that it expects Security Council members to do “more than simply condemn the missile strikes on the civilian population.”

“Our patience has run out. We call on our allies—the member states of the UN Security Council—to finally move beyond repeated expressions of deep concern and futile appeals to Moscow to take the toughest possible measures against the Russian Federation,Melnik emphasized.

He also called for Russia’s complete isolation within the United Nations.

The time has come to treat the Russians at the UN as what they truly are—a pariah state, the diplomat noted.

According to Melnik, it is necessary to cease “business as usual” interactions with the Russian delegation and “make them feel like pariahs at the UN, so that no one will shake their hands anymore.”

He added that “our allies must also push for the same approach toward Russia from the countries of the Global South. Enough of coddling them.”

This was reported by “Ukrinform,” citing Volodymyr Pavlichenko, Ukraine’s deputy permanent representative to the UN.

The UN Security Council will convene a meeting in response to the latest Russian shelling of Ukraine.

Ukraine has requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council following the second massive shelling by Russia in just a few days. Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga called on the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which currently holds the Council presidency, as well as the permanent members of the Security Council, to support this request.
