Ukrainian man, twice barred from leaving the country, demands 300 billion hryvnias in compensation – Supreme Court sides with him

A Ukrainian man who was twice denied permission to leave the country filed a lawsuit seeking over 300 billion hryvnias in compensation. He argues that he had a legal right to cross the border as he cares for his mother-in-law and has official permanent residence status in Canada.

The plaintiff seeks 3,051 hryvnias in material damages and more than 300 billion hryvnias for moral damages. The Supreme Court sided with him, recognizing the refusals as unjustified and confirming his right to leave the country.

This case highlights the importance of protecting citizens’ legal rights at border crossings and could set a precedent for similar cases in the future.
