Ukrainians expect the war to be protracted, but their willingness to endure it is waning

Ukrainians expect the war to be protracted, but their willingness to endure it is waning

Nearly half of Ukrainians expect the war with Russia to end in 2027, with most of them anticipating it will happen in the second half of the year. Only 31% of respondents believe hostilities will cease by the end of 2026.

This is reported by KIIS based on the results of its April survey. About 21% of respondents currently have no definite opinion regarding the possible timing of the conflict’s end.

Sociologists note a gradual decline in the proportion of citizens willing to endure the war for as long as necessary. While this figure stood at 54% in early March, it had dropped to 48% by the end of April. Another 4% of respondents agree to endure the war for one year, bringing the total to 52% of those surveyed who are prepared for a prolonged conflict. The number of those willing to endure a short period of several months remains stable at 29%.

At the same time, uncertainty is growing in society regarding people’s own ability to endure the conditions of martial law. The number of people who could not answer the question about endurance rose from 16% in March to 19% in April. The survey results indicate that despite a general understanding of the duration of the conflict with Russia, the population’s psychological resilience is gradually being depleted. Most Ukrainians remain prepared for a long period, but the trend in readiness shows negative developments compared to the beginning of spring.

Ukrainians have generally become more favorable toward Western countries, but the level of sympathy toward the U.S., the EU, and NATO has declined slightly. The most positive views are toward the Scandinavian and Baltic states. Ukrainians rate Russia, Belarus, and Iran the worst.

Residents of the six largest European Union countries increasingly view the United States as a potential threat rather than an ally during Donald Trump’s presidency. These sentiments have shifted against the backdrop of Washington’s political decisions and foreign policy course.
