Ukrposhta has fully automated the sorting of packages and letters

The national postal operator, JSC "Ukrposhta," has announced the full automation of all processes related to the sorting of parcels, letters, newspapers, and medications.

According to the company’s CEO, Ihor Smilianskyi, the launch of the new robotic lines marks the company’s transition to the “Ukrposhta 2.0” development phase. By comparison, as recently as 2016, absolutely all mail and cargo distribution processes at the company were carried out exclusively by hand. The company’s CEO wrote about this on his official Telegram channel.

The total capacity of the upgraded parcel complexes now allows for the processing of over three million shipments daily. The sorting capacity for periodicals can exceed fourteen million copies per month, for letters—over sixteen billion, and for medications—about eight thousand orders per day. The modernization project lasted thirty-seven months, and the total investment amounted to six hundred ninety million hryvnias of the company’s own funds (approximately fourteen million euros). The head of Ukrposhta emphasized the project’s financial efficiency, noting that a similar automation project for the Croatian postal service cost 270 million euros, while Poland plans to spend over 330 million euros on a similar initiative.

A key feature of the modernization was the use of exclusively domestic, unique equipment from Ukrainian Intelligent Systems (UIS), in which 98 percent of all components and spare parts are manufactured directly in Ukraine. The systems were equipped with advanced optical character recognition (OCR) technology, which allows the machines to accurately read and sort letters even with handwritten postal codes and addresses. Thanks to process optimization, the company has achieved a delivery on-time rate of nearly 98 percent and reduced the processing time for international shipments at the border to 24 hours. The company’s next steps will include improving the performance of post offices and couriers, as well as implementing artificial intelligence for logistics route planning.

Ukrposhta disclosed the salaries of Supervisory Board members following a complaint by journalists to the ombudsman.

Ukrposhta received 100% protection as a military infrastructure facility.
