Ukrainian cities are suffering from abnormal surface overheating that exceeds levels seen in European capitals

Based on satellite imagery from the Copernicus Sentinel-3 program for June 26–29, 2026, the temperature of asphalt, roofs, and soil in Kyiv reached 51.2 °C.

The study demonstrates the “urban heat island” effect, where densely built-up areas heat up much more intensely than green spaces.

Experts analyzed environmental conditions in Kyiv, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Odesa, and Crimea, and compared these data with those from Paris and Warsaw.

The highest temperatures within the sample were recorded in Crimea—54.5 °C—and in Odesa—52.9 °C.

By comparison, the maximum surface temperature in Paris was 47.2 °C, and in Warsaw—50.1 °C, which confirms the critical nature of the situation in Ukrainian regions.

In Kyiv, the hottest spots were industrial and transportation hubs, particularly the Darnytsia industrial zone and the area around the Bortnytsia aeration station.

On the right bank of the capital, temperature peaks of up to 47 °C were observed in the industrial districts of Obolon and Podil.

At the same time, large green spaces and bodies of water act as natural air conditioners.

“Green spaces, bodies of water, and low building density directly affect how comfortable people are during the summer heat. Satellite data makes this very clear: just step away from the solid expanse of asphalt and concrete into a forest or park—and the surface temperature can be 10–15 degrees lower,” comments Anna Denysenko, head of corporate social responsibility at LUN.

An example of this thermal regulation is the Holosiivskyi Forest, where the surface temperature dropped to 20 °C, while outside its boundaries it rose sharply.

Similar trends have been observed in Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk, where densely built-up central neighborhoods fare significantly better in the “temperature battle” solely due to their proximity to park areas or forested areas.
