Body cameras will automatically activate for police officers in the Ternopil region when they use their weapons
The Ternopil Regional Police became the first regional unit in the country to implement an advanced system for automatically activating body-worn cameras when service firearms are used.
The new smart system is designed to completely eliminate the human factor, as in extreme situations, a law enforcement officer may not have time or may forget to manually activate recording.
The innovative system works by integrating equipment: a special magnetic wireless sensor is mounted on the officer’s tactical holster and synchronized with the body camera via a secure Bluetooth connection. As soon as the gun is removed from the holster, the sensor instantly sends a signal, and the recorder automatically begins recording the incident. As explained by Andriana Slobodyan, head of the management department of the Main Inspectorate of the National Police in the Ternopil region, the new-generation cameras also support eSIM technology. This allows for a stable real-time video stream to be transmitted via high-speed mobile internet directly to the Main Department of the National Police’s Situation Center. Thanks to the online broadcast, management and duty officers at command posts can instantly assess the situation at the scene and remotely coordinate the actions of their subordinates.
Currently, this unique system has already been officially put into operation and is actively used in the daily operations of two key units. These are the officers of the KORD police special unit, as well as the special rapid response unit, which was established and operates under the Chortkiv District Police Department (it is the first to respond to calls involving the threat of firearms or explosive devices). The department’s leadership emphasizes that the automatic recording of actions in critical situations not only minimizes the risk of operational errors but also significantly strengthens oversight of legal compliance, ensuring legal protection for both civilians and police officers themselves.
This was reported by the press service of the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Ternopil region.
The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has signed a contract to purchase body-worn cameras for military personnel worth nearly 291 million hryvnias.
An official from the “Municipal Security” agency will face trial over the purchase of substandard body cameras.
