In Ukraine, there is a proposal to donate unsold food to charity for free

In Ukraine, there is a proposal to enact legislation allowing stores to donate unsold food products that are nearing their expiration dates but remain safe for consumption. The corresponding bill, No. 15058, was drafted as part of efforts to harmonize Ukrainian legislation with European Union standards.

The document provides for the introduction of a food banking system in Ukraine—a practice common in many EU countries, including France, Germany, and Spain. This involves donating unsold but edible food to charitable organizations, which can then assemble food packages or prepare hot meals for people in need.

Currently, Ukrainian law does not contain provisions that would allow businesses to officially donate such products to charity.

The authors of the initiative emphasize that food safety must remain the top priority. They propose introducing particularly strict controls for meat, dairy products, eggs, fish, and other perishable goods. Market operators will assess their suitability for consumption, provided that proper temperature conditions are maintained.

At the same time, experts point out the seasonal increase in the risk of food poisoning. According to the Center for Public Health, 7,469 cases of acute intestinal infections were recorded in Ukraine in June, compared to 5,208 in May.

This is stated in draft law No. 15058.

As a reminder, a petition calling for a four-day workweek has appeared on the government’s website.
