For the first time in Ukraine, a child received a heart transplant following a Fontan procedure
Ukrainian doctors performed a heart transplant for the first time on a child who had previously undergone a Fontan procedure. The donor organ was transported from the Okhmatdyt National Children’s Specialized Hospital to the Center for Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, where medical professionals successfully performed this unique surgical procedure.
The donor heart was handed over to the transplant team in complete silence, after which it was promptly transported to the Center for Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery.
The organ was transplanted into a child with a severe congenital heart defect who had previously undergone a Fontan procedure.
The medical facility emphasized that this is the first heart transplant in Ukraine performed on a child following such a complex cardiac surgery.
According to the doctors, the donor heart began beating while still in the operating room, giving the young patient a chance at life.
Before the organ was transferred, medical staff at the Okhmatdyt National Children’s Specialized Hospital formed a guard of honor for the child donor and her family, paying tribute to their decision.
The Center for Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery expressed its sincere condolences to the parents of the donor child, who agreed to organ donation during the most difficult moment of their lives.
The doctors emphasized that it was precisely this decision that made it possible to save another child’s life, calling it an act of extraordinary humanity and courage.

Earlier, doctors at the Center for Pediatric Medicine in Lviv successfully performed a complex surgery on a 1.5-year-old boy from Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast who was born with a severe tongue malformation. Due to the congenital defect, the tongue was almost immobile and fused to the lower jaw, so the child could not eat or swallow on his own and had to be fed through a tube.
Ukrainian military medics successfully operated on a soldier who sustained a gunshot wound during a combat mission. The complexity of the case lay in the fact that the bullet was constantly shifting position within his body due to the formation of a hematoma.
In Lviv, doctors saved a 61-year-old woman from the Lviv region who had sustained severe injuries in a traffic accident. The woman underwent several complex surgeries, spent 13 days on a ventilator, and returned home after prolonged treatment.
