The High Anti-Corruption Court has ordered bail for a retired judge who is a suspect in a corruption case involving the Supreme Court. The decision was made as part of the investigation into the circumstances of the case.
The Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office announced this on Facebook.
According to the court’s decisions, bail in the amounts of 3 million UAH and 900,000 UAH, respectively, was imposed on the suspect.
On May 25, the High Anti-Corruption Court (HACC) imposed a preventive measure in the form of a 3 million hryvnia bail on Supreme Court Judge Zhanna Yelenina, who was notified of her status as a suspect in a corruption case involving the Supreme Court.
On May 21, the High Anti-Corruption Court imposed preventive measures in the form of bail in the amounts of 2.5 million UAH and 2 million UAH on two judges who are suspects in a corruption case at the Supreme Court.
On May 19, the NABU announced that it was conducting investigative actions as part of a corruption case at the Supreme Court.
On the same day, the bureau announced charges against three sitting Supreme Court judges, as well as a retired judge. It was noted that this case is related to the one in which charges were previously brought against former Supreme Court Chief Justice Vsevolod Knyazev.
In May 2023, NABU announced that it had uncovered a scheme involving the receipt of $2.7 million in illicit benefits by the leadership and judges of the Supreme Court.
According to the investigation, the bribe was related to a decision adopted on April 19, 2023, by the Grand Chamber of the Supreme Court in a case regarding the legality of the 2002 acquisition of a stake in the Poltava Mining and Processing Plant by Ferrexpo, one of whose shareholders is businessman Kostyantyn Zhevago.
During the Supreme Court plenary session, 140 judges supported a motion of no confidence against Supreme Court Chief Justice Vsevolod Knyazev. The plenary also adopted a resolution to terminate the chief justice’s powers.
The National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) have completed their investigation into the case involving an alleged bribe offer to members of parliament by Yulia Tymoshenko, leader of the Batkivshchyna party, and have made the case materials available to the defense prior to the trial. The parliamentarian herself did not appear for the review.
As a reminder, the court lifted the seizure of some of Yulia Tymoshenko’s and her husband’s property.
