Video: Ukrainian veteran takes his first paragliding flight after four amputations

Ukrainian veteran Mykola Shot, who lost all four limbs after being seriously wounded on the front lines, fulfilled a long-held dream—he paraglided over the Carpathians for the first time.

After a long rehabilitation, the 41-year-old soldier has learned to walk on prosthetics, drive a car on his own, climb mountains, and set records. This time, he took a paragliding flight.

Staff at the Unbroken rehabilitation center said that the veteran was nervous before the flight, and the preparation required significant effort. Despite this, the flight was a success.

“Words can’t describe it… You all looked so tiny from up there. It was just awesome! I’d definitely fly again!” Mykola Shot shared his impressions.

Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi reacted to the event, calling the veteran’s feat an example of resilience.

Mykola Shot is originally from Novoyavorivsk in the Lviv region. He joined the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the early days of the full-scale invasion and served in the 93rd Separate Mechanized Brigade “Kholodny Yar.” In 2024, he sustained a severe mine-blast injury that resulted in the loss of both arms and legs. After treatment and rehabilitation, he returned to an active life and became a mentor at the Unbroken rehabilitation center.

This was reported by the Lviv City Council on August 2.

As a reminder, Ukrainian mountaineer Hanna Yatsyna became the youngest woman in Ukrainian history to climb Mount Everest. The athlete reached the world’s highest peak on her 25th birthday, setting a national record.
